Meter Replacement Program

The Grafton Water Utility is currently in the process of replacing the aging water meters throughout the Village of Grafton. This is mandated by the Public Service Commission (PSC), which requires the replacement of water meters every 20 years. The water meters throughout the Village are approaching, or have already passed, their designated lifespan and are scheduled to be replaced. During the appointment, Utility personnel will also be performing a cross connection control inspection, which is mandated by the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Learn more about cross connection control inspections here

If your residence or business is due for a water meter replacement, a notification/letter will be sent in the mail with instructions to set up an appointment. The replacement usually takes 15-30 minutes to complete and is no cost to you. Please only call if you receive a letter in the mail.

Things to Consider Before the Appointment
  • An adult over the age of 18 must be present for the appointment.
  • Attempt to locate your water meter. It is usually located in the basement or a water closet. Our employees will need access and space to work.
  • If your meter is not located in your residence (i.e., your neighbor's unit in a side-by-side), call and let a Utility employee know. This may alter when the meter replacement can be completed, as your neighbor will also need to be involved in the scheduling process.
  • The water will be turned off for a couple minutes at most while the meter is being changed out.
Please see below for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and other information.
FAQs

Q: Do I have to complete the meter change?
A: Yes. The PSC requires the Grafton Water Utility to change out meters on a 20-year replacement schedule per PSC 185.76(6). This gives the Utility legal authority to access and change out the meter. Failure to allow the Utility to access and replace the meter can result in disconnection.

Q: How long does the meter replacement take?
A: A typical water meter replacement usually takes 15-30 minutes to complete.

Q: How can I schedule an appointment?
A: To schedule the meter change appointment, please call the Utility office at 262-375-5330 during normal business hours or email utilityclerk@village.grafton.wi.us. If you reach the answering machine, please leave a message with your name, address, and a telephone number where you can be reached during the day.

Q: When can appointments be scheduled?
A: Appointments are scheduled Monday - Friday between 7:30a.m. and 2:30p.m. If these hours do not work for you, please call the Utility office at 262-375-5330 during normal business hours to see if we can accommodate a day and time that works.

Q: How can I cancel or reschedule an appointment?
A: To cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call the Utility office at 262-375-5330 during normal business hours. We would appreciate a 24-hour notice for any rescheduling or cancellations.

Q: How much will the meter change cost?
A: Your meter will be replaced at no cost to you.

Q: Where is my water meter located?
A: The location of each water meter varies, but it is usually located in the basement of the home. Typically, it will be along the outside wall closest to the street where the water main is located. In side-by-sides, water meters may be in each basement, or those water meters may be located in a single unit.

Q: Will my water be disconnected during the replacement?
A: Yes. Water service will be turned off inside the home during the replacement. Interrupted service should last less than a few minutes, and service will be turned back on once the meter has been changed.

Q: Who will come and change the meter?
A: Grafton Water Utility employees will complete all meter replacements.
